Westwood grocery store that was site of deadly crash to reopen Wednesday
A grocery store in West Los Angeles that was the site of a violent fatal crash will reopen Wednesday. Officials at 99 Ranch Market in Westwood said in a media statement that they coordinated with “the appropriate agencies” to find a day to open their doors for the first time since last Thursday’s crash, which killed three people and left six others hurt. The three who were killed in the crash were identified by the L.A. County Medical Examiner as 42-year-old Deris Renoj; 28-year-old Zih Dao and 52-year-old Leonel Mateo. 99 Ranch Market noted in the media statement that the reopening “may be an emotional moment for many,” leading the grocer to “approach the reopening with care and sensitivity.” “Our hearts remain with everyone affected by the tragic incident at our Westwood store: the families, loved ones, colleagues and community members grieving this loss,” the store’s media release reads in part. “Our focus will remain on supporting our employees and their families while we continue to cooperate fully with authorities.” Officials concluded their statement with a request for “continued compassion and respect for the privacy of all those affected.” The crash itself took place at 12:11 p.m. on Feb. 5, and involved a 92-year-old driver who had previously struck a bicyclist about a block away. The bicyclist declined transport to a hospital. Video of the incident taken by a bystander shows the vehicle veering toward the sidewalk and crashing straight through the glass front of the grocery store, located at the corner of Westwood Boulevard and Rochester Avenue. Authorities said in the wake of the crash that it appeared to be unintentional, with a Los Angeles Fire Department official describing the incident to KTLA as "an unfortunate accident." The elderly driver, who was not identified by name, is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
