West Virginia church mourns pastor’s death in New Year’s Day tragedy

The communities of Hurricane and South Charleston are devastated by the tragic loss of Sam Pierson Jr, the lead pastor of Grace Church of the Nazarene in South Charleston. Pierson, aged 44, passed away suddenly on Thursday evening after an accident involving a truck in his garage. He had served as the church's lead pastor for seven and a half years and was admired for his dedication to his family, his service as a military veteran, and his commitment to his faith. Known for his humor, Pierson would often add witty lines to the church's marquee. Superintendent Bret Layton described him as irreplaceable and deeply missed by all who knew him. Mayor Scott Edwards also expressed condolences, highlighting Pierson's positive impact on the Hurricane community. Both the family and the church have requested privacy during this difficult time, with details about memorial services to be shared in the future.
