Watch: Wrong-way driver crashes on Shoreway despite safety measures

BRATENAHL, Ohio (WJW) -- Video released to the FOX 8 I-Team shows how a wrong-way driver caused a horrific crash on the Shoreway despite new safety measures. So, we investigated. And, we found a second serious crash happened just after the crash with the wrong-way driver. Bratenahl Police video shows officers sorting out what had just happened on the Shoreway. You see cars smashed with one flipped. And, you see people hurt, including a pregnant woman. It all started with a wrong-way driver. The I-Team filed a records request with the Ohio Department of Transportation for video from highway cameras. The video shows a driver barreling down the middle of the Shoreway going the wrong way. Then, that driver slams head-on into another car. But, that violent crash was not the end of it. You see another car creeping through the accident scene when it gets slammed from behind. All of this happened in the wee hours of last Sunday morning near Eddy Road. An officer asks one victim, "Do you know what happened?" She answers, "So, I was trying to pass the accident, but a car behind me was speeding." The other driver in that crash also explained, "The car started swerving. Now, we going 53 on the road. The cars going swerve. I hit the car. And, then, they went to the side." So, what about that wrong-way driver? Along I-90 and I-71, the Ohio Department of Transportation has added sensors on ramps to help detect wrong-way drivers and notify police. The state has also added new warning signs and lights. At the scene, you hear an officer say, "I think this was a wrong-way driver." We checked, and as the investigation began, it was not clear how or where that driver started going the wrong way. It appears that car had not been detected by sensors or cameras while getting on the Shoreway eastbound in the westbound lanes. Bratenahl Police also did not immediately file charges pending more investigation.
