Video shows wrong-way driver before fatal Massachusetts crash
Surveillance footage obtained Thursday by NewsCenter 5 shows a driver taking a wrong turn in Boston, entering Interstate 93, before crashes that killed a man and injured a family of four in June. The footage from June 27 shows a vehicle at the top of the Mass Ave. ramp, turning the wrong way onto Frontage Road. After the car leaves the view of the first camera, it is seen on another camera entering I-93 in the wrong direction. Police identified the driver of the wrong-way vehicle as Antone Carvalho, 81, of Somerset. In the moments that followed, investigators said a family of four crashed their Honda Odyssey while getting out of the way. Carvalho went on to crash head-on into a Chevrolet Cruze, killing a Haverhill man in his 20s, police said.Carvalho was taken to an area hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries. Officials planned to summon him to court to face charges.This was the second fatal wrong-way crash on Massachusetts roads in just 3 days. Sheena Grandpre, 43, of Medway, was killed after crashing head-on into another vehicle while driving the wrong way on I-290 East in Northborough.In May, a Massachusetts State Trooper was killed while driving on Route 1 North by a wrong-way driver.Last week, Gov. Maura Healey and highway officials announced a statewide expansion of a wrong-way driver detection system.It's an initiative that was in development for about a year, following several fatal incidents involving wrong-way drivers that include the deaths of Trooper Kevin Trainor, Gloucester High School student Christopher Dailey and Endicott College Sgt.
