Video shows moments before Publix fatal crash, community mourns cherished neighbor
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) - We're learning more about Sunday's tragic incident that claimed the life of an 82-year-old Panama City Beach woman. Friends and neighbors have identified her as Deborah Murphy. Florida Highway Patrol troopers are still investigating the crash that took Murphy's life. State troopers released a portion of the surveillance video, showing the moments that led up to the deadly crash between an SUV and a woman walking out of a grocery store. The tragedy happened a few minutes before 1:00 p.m. Sunday, in the parking lot of the Publix supermarket at the corner of Magnolia Beach Road and Navy Boulevard. Authorities believe 26-year-old Carlos Daniel Suarez-Contreras from Atlanta, Georgia, was driving the black SUV. The video shows him pulling forward, then stopping. The video then shows the victim, 82-year-old Deborah Murphy, walking out of the store with her groceries. Around the same time, the driver puts the SUV in reverse, backing over Murphy. Troopers say the driver told them he never saw her. Both Suarez-Contreras and his passenger, 29-year-old Luis Sanabria-Perez, had ICE detainers. News13 spoke with Murphy's neighbor, who shared some sweet photos. She said Murphy was the best neighbor, close friend, and was like a grandmother to their kids. Adding that Murphy was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed in the community. Murphy retired in Bay County and lived alone with her dog Masey. Her daughter picked up Masey on Monday. Both men are being held in the Bay County jail, but are not charged in connection with the crash at this time.
