Video shows Genise Taylor's traffic stop hours before fatal wrong-way I-75 crash in Collier County
Bodycam footage from the traffic stop of Genise Taylor that took place hours before she was involved in a deadly wrong-way I-75 crash that killed 96-year-old Arthur Gilbert has been released. The footage was released after an internal investigation by the Collier County Sheriff's Office cleared Deputy Eric Pellegrino of any wrongdoing for letting Taylor go. The bodycam footage details the traffic stop Pellegrino conducted after pulling Taylor over for driving at 71 mph in a 45-mph zone along US-41 before the crash that killed Gilbert on March 18 at approximately 4:18 a.m.The footage shows Pellegrino pulling over Taylor for speeding."Listen, I remember you from Mercato," Taylor said to Pellegrino in the video."Yeah, I get that, but you were going 71 miles in a 45," Pellegrino said in response.Taylor then went through field sobriety tests. The video showed that Taylor was not able to keep her balance and was struggling to follow Pellegrino's finger. The footage goes on to show Pellegrino not allowing Taylor to drive home, and Taylor calling a friend to pick her up. Taylor claimed that Pellegrino knew her to her friend."I'm here with the officer; he knows me," Taylor said. The footage shows Taylor denying that she was intoxicated, and claiming that she only had two shots two hours before she was pulled over by Pellegrino. She later added that she had wine."I'm okay to drive, I promise you," Taylor told Pellegrino, before agreeing to call her friend to come pick her up.Taylor later received a citation from Pellegrino for speeding. After receiving the citation, Taylor claimed that Pellegrino was giving her special treatment because they knew each other, a claim Pellegrino denied when she made it."Don't be driving drunk, because what's gonna happen is: you're gonna kill yourself, or you're gonna kill somebody else," Pellegrino told Taylor. "Don't look at this as a free pass, because if anyone else in this district pulled you over, you'd be in jail right now."Taylor faces charges of DUI manslaughter, DUI damage to person/property, vehicular homicide, and reckless driving with damage to person/property. She pleaded not guilty to the charges in April. Pellegrino shared the following comment with Gulf Coast News:“'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.'
