US skies still experiencing close calls a year after fatal Washington, DC, incident

A year ago, 67 individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident when a commercial airplane and a military helicopter collided in a corridor that had been identified as a safety concern. Since then, there have been ongoing reports of close calls in various locations across the country. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently highlighted at a hearing the existence of other risky areas. During the hearing, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy expressed frustration with the lack of response to red flags raised by individuals regarding safety issues, stressing the importance of ensuring safety. Reports of near mid-air collisions between commercial airplanes and other piloted aircraft have emerged, with 59 such incidents recorded in the nine months following the tragic crash on January 29. These near misses occurred at multiple airports, including some where incidents involving helicopters were reported as well. The NTSB investigation revealed systematic failures that contributed to the crash, emphasizing a need for improvements in safety protocols and communication. Families of the victims have been advocating for reforms in aviation safety, urging for the implementation of NTSB recommendations to prevent future tragedies.
