UPDATE: More details available after 4 transported in crash at U.S. 61/I-280

UPDATE: Four people were transported to hospitals after a multi-vehicle crash shortly before 11:15 a.m. Friday, May 15 on High 61 North (West River Drive) at Interstate 280. Davenport Police, Fire, and Medic EMS of Scott County responded to Highway 61 Northbound (West River Dr) at I-280 in reference to a multi-vehicle collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that a passenger car was traveling north on Highway 61 and tried to make a lane change in front of a moving semi when it struck the semi and two other vehicles before crossing into oncoming lanes of traffic. The woman who was driving the passenger car suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A 10-year-old passenger was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation of minor injuries. The woman who was driving the semi was also transported to a local hospital for evaluation of injuries she suffered during the crash. The Davenport Police Department Traffic Safety Unit is investigating this incident;. No further information was available Friday. One was in serious condition and sent directly to Iowa City, while three others went to local hospitals, according to officials at the scene. One person was extricated from a vehicle. Preliminary reports suggest a semi with a dump trailer hit a recycling bin hauler from behind and led to at least two other vehicles being involved in the crash, but an investigation is ongoing. Drivers exiting I-280 at U.S. 61 will only be able to go one direction. Illinois-bound drivers will only be able to take U.S. 61 toward Blue Grass, while traffic on I-280 headed away from the Mississippi River will only be able to turn into Davenport on what is now Business U.S. 61, or Iowa 461. Drivers should avoid the area if possible. The road under the I-280 overpass is expected to remain blocked for a while as investigators look to piece together the crash.
