Two Vermilion women dead after car crash into Lorain marina waters (UPDATED)

LORAIN — Two people are dead after a car crashed into Beaver Park Marina early Friday morning. Members of the the Lorain Police Underwater Recovery Team discovered a black Chevrolet sedan in the water with one of the women dead inside just after 8 a.m. Friday. The second woman was found dead in the water a short time later, a release said. Lorain County Coroner Dr. Frank Miller released the names of the two young women killed in the crash: Paige Williams, 17, and Lucille Hopkins, 18, both of Vermilion. A statement from EHOVE Career Center identified Williams as a cosmetology student, and Hopkins as a 2025 graduate of the medical careers track. Both EHOVE and Vermilion schools said that additional counselors will be available next week for students and staff. It was not immediately clear which of them was driving the vehicle, he said. Autopsies are scheduled for today.  The recovery team had been searching at Beaver Park Marina near West Erie Avenue and Oak Point Road after a car reportedly went into the lake around 4:17 a.m. Friday.  The search began after an 18-year-old man entered a nearby home with injuries consistent with a vehicle crash, police said. When the homeowners called police, the 18-year-old told them he had been in the back seat of a vehicle driven by a female, with another female in the front passenger seat, when the vehicle hit a utility pole and went into the lake.  The man said he escaped through a back seat window, but that he had not seen the other two since the crash and did not know if they made it out.  The man was taken to Mercy Health - Lorain for treatment.  He was not named in the release.  Lorain police are still investigating to determine the circumstances of the crash and why the car left the roadway.
