Truck driver accused in fatal nine-vehicle crash near I-71 appears in court

DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) -- A truck driver charged in a nine-vehicle crash near Interstate 71 that resulted in three deaths made his first court appearance on Monday. Modou Ngom, 50, of Columbus, made his initial appearance in Delaware County Common Pleas Court on an aggravated vehicular homicide charge. Ngom was driving a semi-truck and trailer just before 6:30 p.m. on US-36/SR-37 and failed to stop while approaching traffic. The truck hit several vehicles from behind and led to the wreck. A man, woman, and one-year-old from Ashley, Ohio all traveling in a Chevrolet were killed in the crash while three others were hospitalized. I-71 in both directions near the crash site was closed for several hours on Saturday evening. During his court hearing, Ngom was given a $50,000 cash surety bond and was ordered to not drive. State prosecutors said they anticipate more charges to be filed. Ngom has a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 21 at 3 p.m. If convicted, Ngom could face between 12-60 months in prison.
