Iowa Lakes Community College held a news conference on Thursday afternoon to give an update on the deadly bus crash involving the school's baseball team.During the news conference, Iowa Lakes president Scott Stokes, Iowa State Patrol Lt. Aaron Smidt and Iowa Lakes Athletic Director Troy Larson spoke."This has been an incredibly difficult time for our community college community," Stokes said. "Our students, faculty, staff, and families have been deeply affected. Our immediate priority has been the safety and well-being of our students, as well as we have been in close communication with families and are providing counseling and academic support to ensure they have the care and support that they need."Stokes said that the college is deeply grateful for the "overwhelming" outpouring of support from across the state and beyond."The messages, prayers and encouragement have meant more than we can express," he said.Officials identify baseball player killed in bus crashIowa Lakes Athletic Director Troy Larson said the baseball player who was killed in the crash was 19-year-old Carter Johnson, of Rapid City, South Dakota. Johnson was a freshman outfielder for the Iowa Lakes baseball team."Our baseball team is more than a roster, they're a family. Carter was a great teammate, a friend and a valued member of our athletic community," Troy Larson, Iowa Lakes athletic director, said during a news conference on Thursday. "In his time here, he really impacted our campus, both within our halls, in the classrooms, as well as on the playing field. We're heartbroken for this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carter's family. We cannot imagine the depth of their loss and we are holding them close in our hearts." Officials identify Iowa Lakes baseball player killed in bus crashWhat we know about the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball bus crashThe crash at around 11 a.m. Wednesday left more than 30 people injured and one dead.Smidt said that when first responders arrived at thes cene of the crash, student athletes who were in a van traveling behind the bus were providing CPR, but Johnson was prounounced dead at the scene. He said the other 32 occupants of the bus were injured."It's impressive when you have young student athletes stepping up and performing that sort of an act on somebody," Smidt said. "First responders did make not that CPR provided by those student athletes was very impressive."Smidt said the 32 who were injured are all recovering. He said four medical helicopters responded to the crash and three people were transported to hospitals in the Des Moines area, but he did not know if they were still receiving care.According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, the driver of the bus failed to negotiate a curve on Iowa Highway 30 near Marengo Avenue, causing the bus to roll over onto its side. Two of the occupants in the bus were ejected and trapped under the vehicle when it stopped rolling.First responders from four different counties responded to the crash, including Calhoun, Webster, Sac and Pocahontas counties.Smidt said the crash remains under investigation.No other vehicles were involved, although an Iowa Lakes van carrying six people was traveling with the bus.Iowa Lakes canceled classes Thursday and Friday following the crash. "Right now, we're focusing on wrapping our arms around all of all of our students, but specifically our student athletes and our baseball student athletes," Larson said. "We're providing counseling, flexibility and spaces to grieve. That's what we do at Iowa Lakes. We support our students, not just academically, not just on the playing fields, but as whole individuals.""Our coaches are leading with compassion," he continued.
