Texas Roadhouse worker saves couple from car crash, awarded scholarship to train as EMT

Juan Mendoza, 19, was driving with his girlfriend on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in southern Texas when he noticed a car spinning out and stopped in the middle of the highway after a collision. Instantly, he took action."My first thought is that they could have kids, and I have little brothers," Mendoza said. "And that thought rushed through me, and I thought, I'm going to get them out." Juan O'Matta, who turns 80 this month, was driving back from a doctor's appointment with his wife Adriana when their car was hit and spun into the road."Nobody stopped," O'Matta said of Mendoza's heroic act. "He was the only one who stopped." Adriana expressed her gratitude, calling Mendoza their angel. Videos of the incident show Mendoza, a cook at a nearby Texas Roadhouse, rushing into the road to help the O'Mattas from their car. Despite his bold efforts, the couple never got his name. Fortunately, CBS News contributor David Begnaud orchestrated a heartfelt reunion at the Texas Roadhouse where Mendoza works, reuniting them with the couple. Acadian Ambulance Service's president, Justin Back, offered Mendoza a scholarship for EMT school and a potential job after completion. Additionally, Mayor Adrian Gonzalez of Weslaco, Texas declared an official "Juan Mendoza Day" to honor his heroism. Mendoza credits his parents for instilling in him a humble and helping nature, stating that the O'Mattas "needed help." David Begnaud continues to uncover inspiring stories like this through his "CBS Mornings" series, "Beg-Knows America," shining a light on everyday heroes and spreading positive news.
