Teen killed, another critical in North Las Vegas crash
North Las Vegas, Nev. -- A teenage girl is dead and another young woman is critically injured after a violent crash involving multiple vehicles and pedestrians in North Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. According to the North Las Vegas Police Department, officers responded around 3:41 p.m. on Saturday to a report of a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash near West Craig Road and Simmons Street. When officers arrived, they found a chaotic scene involving several vehicles and pedestrians. The department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit took over the case. Police say preliminary findings show a 2020 BMW X3 was traveling northbound on Simmons Street at a high rate of speed, weaving through traffic and passing other vehicles as it approached Craig Road. At the intersection, the BMW collided with a 2021 Kia Optima that was making a left turn. After the initial crash, investigators say the BMW continued northbound and lost control. The vehicle left the roadway, crashing into a utility pole, landscaping, and a cinder block wall before striking two pedestrians on the sidewalk. One of the pedestrians, a 17-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 19-year-old woman was taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Police said the driver of the Kia Optima was not hurt. A juvenile passenger inside the BMW was also not injured. The driver of the BMW, identified as a 32-year-old man, showed signs of possible impairment, according to police. Investigators conducted a blood draw as part of the investigation. He was later taken into custody and booked on multiple charges, including reckless driving resulting in death, reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm, child endangerment, and driving without a valid license. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Las Vegas Police Department at 702-633-9111. To remain anonymous, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of Nevada at 702-385-5555 or online.
