Survivor’s family speaks after fiery I-40 crash

DEL CITY, Okla. (KFOR) — Two teens, Jeremiah and Mileena, are in the hospital after surviving a fiery crash on I-40 last Friday. Now one of the one of the victim's family members is trying to piece together how this crash happened. "He flipped in the car, it engulfed into flames. They then were essentially being burned alive inside," said Phillissa Ashford, Jeremiah's sister. Ashford credits two people who stopped, raced over, and risked their lives to save the teens."It's not many people like that who will leap into action, that will actually put their lives on the line, to save another person's life, and so our family is beyond grateful," said Ashford. Those two heroes told Ashford what they saw."There were several witnesses," said Ashford. "Jeremiah was traveling westbound on I-40, and he was in the left lane. There was a blue charger in the right lane. He says that the blue charger that's modified with gray and black wingtips on it cut Jeremiah off, and by the time Jeremiah came from behind the 18-wheeler, that's when the 18-wheeler hit him in the front and then the back." When Jeremiah woke up in the hospital, Ashford says he told her the same story. On Friday, firefighters told News 4 a car hydroplaned, causing the crash. On Monday, News 4 checked in with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for an update. They tell us it's still under investigation, but as of right now, troopers say it appears the teens' car lost control and hit the semi, which caused two more cars to crash. The highway patrol's statement does not mention anything about a blue charger. However, Ashford says the person who stopped to help was not able to give their statement to troopers. "He said he was trying to give his statement at the scene, and the police telling him to go on, someone will contact him," said Ashford. "As of today, he said no one has contacted him yet to get information about eyewitness information about the accident. So that's concerning to us as a family. We want to see justice. We want a proper investigation." Troopers tell me details of the investigation can change as they get more evidence. As for Jeremiah's injuries, Ashford told us he's awake, but is burned from the waist down. We do not know the full extent of Mileena's injuries, but we know she suffered severe burns too.
