Stark County 5-year-old dead after heavy machinery accident: Police

STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) -- Stark County officials are investigating after an accident involving a piece of heavy machinery killed a five-year-old boy and injured his father in Plain Township Sunday afternoon. A press release from the Stark County Sheriff's Office says the father was operating a compact earth-moving machine in the backyard of a home, located in the 2400 block of Bur Oak Street NE, around 3:40 p.m. The boy and his mother were inside the home prior to the incident, the release says, and the child went outside at some point prior to the incident. The father found the child with on the ground with severe injuries while backing the machine. The release says the father took the child to Mercy Hospital, where he later died. The release says the father also was treated at Mercy Hospital from injuries sustained when he jumped from the machine. The child's identity has not been released. The incident is still under investigation by the Stark County Coroner's Office and the Stark County Sheriff's Office.
