Speeding Car Kills San Diego Police Officer at 125 MPH

A recently published 325-page investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol has unveiled fresh details surrounding the tragic accident on August 26, 2024, that resulted in the death of San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar and left his partner Zach Martinez critically injured. The events began at 11:31 p.m., when Officer Raymond Rodriguez noticed a BMW driven by 16-year-old Edgar Oviedo making an aggressive turn onto Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Rodriguez turned on his emergency lights to signal a traffic stop, but Oviedo accelerated instead of pulling over. Six seconds later, Rodriguez notified dispatch that the "vehicle is failing to yield." Officers Martinez and Machitar, who were already nearby, responded to assist with the pursuit. The brief chase lasted only 47 seconds. Oviedo, speeding at over 125 miles per hour, collided fatally with the police cruiser driven by Martinez and Machitar. Martinez attempted to evade the collision by accelerating moments before impact, while a sergeant tried to call off the chase concurrently with the crash occurrence. The violent collision caused the police vehicle to catch fire, leading to a chain reaction involving three other vehicles at the scene. Although Martinez was ejected from the vehicle and landed 207 feet away, he miraculously recovered from his critical injuries and resumed duty 118 days later. Martinez commemorated his late partner, Machitar, speaking of the valuable lessons he had taught him about enjoying the job and finding joy in life's moments. Police Chief Scott Wahl also praised Machitar as the kind of teammate one would want.
