Social media creator seriously injured after helping crash victims on Interstate 95

A Connecticut mother of three and social media creator is recovering from life-threatening injuries after her husband says she was struck by a vehicle while helping victims of a crash on Interstate 95. Ashley Taunton, 42, stopped to help after a car hydroplaned off I-95 south during a torrential rainstorm Saturday in Hopkinton. Her husband, Joe Taunton, said Ashley was driving home from Newport with one of their daughters when she saw the crash. "When they were coming down 95 after exit four, another car in front of her hydroplanes went off into the woods," Joe Taunton told NBC 10. "She pulled over... told my daughter to stay in the car and said, 'Call Dad. I'm going to help the accident.'" Joe said Ashley ran to the crashed vehicle and began helping the teenage occupants escape. While she was pulling one of the boys to safety, another vehicle hydroplaned and headed directly toward them. Ashley took the full impact. She was first taken to Westerly Hospital before being transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. Joe said doctors found extensive internal injuries, including damage to her small and large intestines, multiple liver lacerations and a ruptured diaphragm that caused one of her lungs to collapse. Surgeons also repaired a severe leg injury. "She should be able to walk again. God willing if everything goes good," he said. And that's the hope that I need right now," he said. Joe said he was not surprised his wife stopped to help. "No. That's my wife," he said. "I bet if you asked her now... she would do it all over again." Ashley is the creator behind the Instagram account @3littlelambhomestead , where more than 33,000 followers watch her share family life and her Christian faith. The family also learned a shocking detail after arriving at the hospital. Joe said they discovered the teenager Ashley rescued was the son of one of Ashley's longtime friends. Neither family realized the connection until they met in the emergency room waiting area. "As soon as I said '95,' she just started bawling," Joe recalled. "She was like, 'That was Ashley that saved my son.'" Joe said his family has been overwhelmed by support from friends, neighbors, their church community and strangers. "It's been a journey," he said. "But we've had so much support that it's overwhelming." The Taunton family has created a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical bills and other unexpected expenses as Ashley begins what Joe describes as a long road to recovery.
