Serious head-on crash closes part of Gateway Drive

UPDATE: The roadway is back open and crews have cleared the scene. NEOSHO, Mo. — Emergency crews are working the scene of a double fatal crash in Newton County. Around 10:30 Tuesday morning, crews responded to Gateway Drive and Isaac Lane after reports of at least two cars that had crashed - head-on. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has shut down Gateway Drive between Iris Road and Isaac Lane. A trooper on scene tells us their major crash investigation team is on its way from Springfield. The Newton County Coroner has been called to the scene and officials are attempting to contact next of kin. Troopers also tell us that when EMS first arrived, a dog that was in one of the vehicles thought it was protecting its human and wouldn't let them get near the deceased driver. They said the dog was not aggressive and didn't hurt anyone, it was just doing its duty. Authorities are asking people to find an alternate route and avoid the area. DEVELOPING
