School Bus Driver Charged Following Investigation of Deadly Accident that Claimed Life of 11-Year-Old in Aspen Hill
Investigators have concluded their examination of a tragic incident in Maryland where an 11-year-old girl lost her life in a school bus crash. Their findings indicate that the child was deemed at fault for the accident, but the bus driver was also cited for negligence. The incident took place in October 2025 in Aspen Hill, resulting in the death of Summer Lim, a student at Earle B. Wood Middle School. Reports show that the crash occurred when a school bus, driven by 55-year-old Ivan Rivas, was making a turn at an intersection where Lim was crossing on her bicycle. Investigators determined that Lim entered the intersection while the bus was turning, leading to the collision. Despite fault attributed to the child, the bus driver was also found to have acted negligently by moving the bus before coming to a complete stop. This led to Rivas being cited with negligent driving contributing to a fatal accident by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
