Pile-up crash on I-69 southbound near Markle seriously injures 2
HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) — According to a traffic alert, a multi-vehicle crash caused the southbound lanes of I-69 near mile marker 283 to be blocked off. All southbound lanes in the area of the crash have since reopened as of 10 a.m. Saturday. According to a press release from the Huntington County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred at around 5:25 a.m. Saturday, an SUV struck a trailer, spun out, and was then struck head-on by another car. Upon investigation, police determined that the SUV was traveling south on I-69 near mile marker 283 when it hit the trailer of a Walmart semi-truck. The SUV spun out of control and stopped in the right travel lane facing north. The driver of the SUV called 911 when the Jeep approached the SUV, but didn't see the SUV and hit it head-on. The driver of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the side of the road, while the Jeep came to a stop in the left passing lane. A fourth vehicle behind the previous car was able to avoid the SUV but sideswiped the Jeep. The driver of the semi-truck and the fourth vehicle were cleared by medics at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was taken to a nearby hospital, and the SUV driver was airlifted to the hospital. Police believe that poor visibility and adverse weather are to blame for the cause of the accident.
