Person involved in fiery I-15 crash dies; police thank people who helped at scene

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A person involved in a fiery Sunday crash that shut down Interstate 15 has died, according to Mesquite police. Northbound lanes of the highway were closed for hours on Sunday as crews cleared the scene near the Nevada-Arizona border northeast of Las Vegas. An RV reportedly blew a tire and the driver lost control. Investigators said the RV crossed into northbound lanes, colliding with a semi-truck and catching fire. The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and no additional information has been released. A Facebook post by Mesquite police described a chaotic scene as others stopped to help people hurt in the crash. "Officers were on scene quickly however, before we were able to arrive, several citizens stopped without hesitation to help complete strangers. Without regard for their own safety, they ran toward danger to pull injured motorists away from the burning RV," the social media post said. "One individual was moved from the roadway to safety, while another citizen pulled a motorist from the RV moments before it became fully engulfed in flames. As they led one of the victims to safety, multiple explosions erupted from the vehicle. Many stopped and provided water and blankets and offered whatever assistance they could provide," police said. Information released Sunday indicated two people were pulled out of the RV and taken to an area hospital. One of those victims was reported to be in very critical condition. "Amid the devastation, officers witnessed countless acts of compassion, courage, and selflessness from ordinary people who simply chose to help," police said. A photo taken from body cam video showed the RV in flames just after the crash. "To every person who stopped to help, offered comfort, or lent a hand in a time of crisis, thank you. Your courage and kindness made a difference, and your actions exemplify the very best of humanity," Mesquite police said.
