Overturned vehicle crash damages utility pole on South Amherst Highway

An early Wednesday morning crash on South Amherst Highway led to a search after responders found an overturned vehicle. According to the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department, the Amherst County Dispatch received an automated iPhone crash alert at about 1:30 a.m. reporting a severe crash on South Amherst Highway. Dispatchers reportedly attempted to call the associated phone number but received no response. When deputies with the Amherst County Sheriff's Office arrived, they reported finding an overturned vehicle that had struck a utility pole. Officials said no driver or occupants were at the scene. The driver then reportedly declined EMS assistance. Appalachian Power was also notified because the crash damaged the utility pole, causing a power outage in the area. The fire department said all responding units cleared the scene at 3:17 a.m.
