One killed after snowmobile accident in Wasatch County
WASATCH COUNTY (ABC4) — One person is dead after a snowmobile accident in Wasatch County, in the third fatality in Utah's snow in three days. According to the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, they responded to an incident in the Iron Mine Mountain area, east of Wooldland around 11:45 a.m. on February 20. Initial reports stated that a snowmobile rider, identified only as an adult male, had crashed and became trapped beneath his snowmobile. The individuals he was with were able to locate him and attempted to resuscitate him using CPR, which was unsuccessful. Personnel with Search and Rescue, emergency medical services, and law enforcement responded to the scene and declared the male was deceased while on scene. At this time, officials have not released additional information on the incident and have not identified the victim. However, The Wasatch County Sheriff's Office stated that "[they] offer its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss." Notably, this is one of several fatalities from winter recreation. Over the last week, two individuals died after being caught in avalanches along the Wasatch Front. On February 18, an adult male and his juvenile son were snowmobiling in the Alta area when they were caught in an avalanche. The adult male was caught and buried and was ultimately found deceased. At this time, officials have not identified his identity. Yesterday, on February 19, another avalanche occurred in a backcountry area near Brighton Ski Resort and a juvenile female was swept away. The juvenile was ultimately located and transported to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, she died as a result of her injuries. Police have since identified her as 11-year-old Madelyn Eitas from Rochester, Massachusetts. Across the state of Utah, avalanche danger is high. Officials recommend avoiding backcountry areas, bringing proper gear when hitting the slopes, and taking an avalanche safety course.
