One injured after I-86 motorcycle crash in Big Flats
BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WETM) – One person has been reported injured following a motorcycle crash that occurred on I-86 in Big Flats following a vehicle collision with a deer on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, May 19, just before 8:30 a.m., deputies with the Chemung County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene of a crash involving a vehicle that hit a deer, as stated in a release from the sheriff's office. Officials say the crash was reported to have occurred in the eastbound lane of I-86 between exits 50 and 51A. While at the scene, officials say another crash occurred involving a 37-year-old man on a motorcycle. Officials say members of the sheriff's office criminal investigation division were then called to the scene to assist with the investigation into the incident. Crews from the New York State Police, Big Flats Fire Department, Erway Ambulance, New York State Department of Transportation and Rinwalske Towing were also called to the scene. As a result of the investigation, officials say it was determined that the motorcycle crash occurred due to high traffic with vehicles abruptly braking. Officials say the motorcyclist avoided colliding with another vehicle by applying his brakes, but he lost control and was ultimately ejected from the motorcycle, landing in the roadway. Officials say the motorcyclist was taken to the Corning Guthrie Hospital before being transferred to Robert Packer Hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. The current condition of the motorcyclist is unknown at this time.
