One dead, three injured in multi-vehicle crash on US-12 in Berrien County

One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash in Berrien County. Deputies with the sheriff's office responded to the three vehicle crash just after 7 p.m. Sunday on US-12 near the US-31 bypass in Bertrand Township. Officials say a SUV was heading east on US-12 when it side-swiped a vehicle that had turned onto US-12 from US-31. The driver of the SUV lost control, crossed the median and was hit by a large pickup truck going westbound. The 57-year-old driver of the SUV, who is from St. Joseph, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Their name has not been released at this time. Two occupants in the pickup were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the first vehicle hit had minor injuries, and refused medical attention. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
