NTSB to investigate Amtrak, freight train crash in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Amtrak passenger train carrying 128 passengers and a Canadian National Railway freight train involved in a crash in Southwest Memphis on Sunday will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. According to a social media post, the NTSB says a team will be sent to Memphis to investigate Sunday's crash. Memphis police say two people were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Amtrak officials say that there were three injuries reported among those on board. WREG crews are seeing the Amtrak train stopped on the tracks along with Memphis police cars at the scene, but did not see the freight train currently on the tracks. WREG viewer Noel Pennington provided video showing the Amtrak train traveling past Riverport Rd., a few minutes before the crash. According to Canadian National spokesperson Ashley Michnowski, emergency responders are on the scene where a CN train "came into contact" with an Amtrak train in Memphis. The company says no fires or dangerous goods were involved. According to Amtrak officials, Amtrak train 59 operating from Chicago to New Orleans was stopped in Memphis, when it was "contacted by a freight train traveling at a slow rate of speed." Police say officers responded to W. Shelby Dr. and Sewanee Rd. around 11:41 a.m. WREG crews saw an MPD officer blocking the road in that area. According to Amtrak officials, there were 128 passengers on board at the time of the crash. Passengers traveling from Memphis to New Orleans "will remain onboard to continue to continue their journey," according to Amtrak officials.
