NTSB expected to investigate deadly plane crash into Akron home

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) -- New video into the FOX 8 newsroom on Friday, May 15, shows family members fleeing their burning home after a small plane crashed into their garage and burst into flames. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to investigate why the plane crashed on Thursday afternoon, May 14, killing the two people on board. Akron firefighters responded just before 4 p.m. in the 2200 block of Canterbury Circle, and found heavy black smoke billowing from the side of the home. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that the two people in the plane were killed. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to identify and examine the two deceased persons and provide an update later, according to a Friday, May 15, notice. A father inside the home told neighbors he was in the basement when he heard the crash. He raced upstairs to rescue his two children, who were napping, as well as the family dog. The family was unharmed. New video submitted by a viewer shows the collision and explosion. A man can then be seen running from the home holding two children. Another home was also evacuated. No one was injured. Guests at the nearby Firestone Country Club told FOX 8 News they could hear the plane overhead sputtering and stalling before it fell out of the sky. "We got a call that residents saw a plane going down into the house. We got more calls that people heard explosions and we arrived to heavy smoke coming out of the house," Akron Fire Department District Chief Sierjie Lash said. The plane, a 1963 Piper Cherokee single‑engine aircraft, crashed less than 5 miles from the Akron Fulton Airport, where it had departed earlier that afternoon. According to FlightAware, the plane had been flying for about an hour and 40 minutes.
