NASA and families commemorate 40 years since Challenger accident

Families of the astronauts who tragically lost their lives in the Challenger space shuttle accident 40 years ago met at the launch site in Cape Canaveral to honor the memory of their loved ones. The spacecraft broke apart during liftoff on January 28, 1986, leading to the loss of all seven crew members. During the memorial ceremony at Kennedy Space Center, Challenger pilot Michael Smith's daughter expressed how that frigid morning forever changed her life and the lives of many others in attendance. The malfunction in the O-ring seals of Challenger's right solid rocket booster caused the shuttle to break apart just 73 seconds after liftoff, underscoring the importance of learning from the tragic incident. With rockets launching frequently and an upcoming moonshot mission on the horizon, vigilance in safety procedures is emphasized. Along with the Challenger crew, other fallen astronauts from various space disasters were also remembered at the Space Mirror Memorial. The annual Day of Remembrance event held by NASA brought together relatives of the Columbia and Apollo missions' crews, reflecting on the loss of the brave individuals and the potential they held.
