MSP: 2 sent to hospital after wrong-way crash on US-131

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — State police say a driver was involved in two separate crashes on US-131 in Grand Rapids Friday morning, including a head-on crash near the S-curve. The Michigan State Police identified the driver as a 59-year-old man in a silver Honda. The first crash happened around 6:45 a.m. on northbound US-131 near Hall Street. According to MSP, the 59-year-old man sideswiped a pickup truck. He fled, troopers say, but the driver of the pickup truck managed to get a picture of his license plate. About six minutes later, state police say the 59-year-old man was driving north in the southbound lanes of US-131 near Market Avenue. That's when he crashed head-on into a Ford sedan, which was being driven by a 24-year-old man, according to troopers. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with injuries to the lower half of the body, MSP said. State police added that the Honda driver was not wearing a seat belt. The crash temporarily snarled traffic on US-131.
