MSP: 2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-196
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — State police say two drivers were killed overnight in a wrong-way crash on I-196 in Grand Rapids. It happened just before 1 a.m. Friday on westbound I-196 near the Lane Avenue NW exit. According to the Michigan State Police, a 36-year-old Grand Rapids man was driving the wrong way, heading east in the westbound lanes in a Jeep Cherokee. He crashed into a westbound Ford Focus, which was being driven by a 39-year-old Jenison woman, troopers said. Both drivers died, MSP said. Their names were not immediately released. Troopers told News 8 it wasn't clear whether alcohol was involved or why the Grand Rapids man was going the wrong way. Westbound I-196 was closed for hours after the crash. It reopened around 4:40 a.m.
