Montgomery Sheriff's Office says 1 dead following fatal crash on Highway 169
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. — The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said one man is dead and several people are injured following a fatal crash on Highway 169. Around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, authorities said they were called out to a two-car crash near Highway 169 and Montgomery County Road 4800, located about a mile south of Cherryvale. According to the sheriff's office, investigators determined a car being driven by Hurshel Miller from Independence was stopped at a stop sign before it drove out onto the highway. Law enforcement said Miller's car was then hit by another car traveling northbound on Highway 169, causing both cars to end up in the ditch along the side of the highway. Deputies said both Miller and the passenger in his car were airlifted to a trauma center to receive treatment, while the driver of the other car and one of the car's three juvenile passengers were taken by EMS to the hospital for treatment. Authorities reported Miller passed away from the injuries he sustained in the crash. "We want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the Miller family," said Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade. "It is never easy to lose a loved one, especially so suddenly in a motor vehicle accident. We also ask the public to keep both the Miller and [the other driver's] families in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time." The sheriff also asked the public to respect the privacy of both families and to not spread unverified information about the crash on social media. The sheriff's office said the crash is currently still under investigation.
