McAllen man dies in airborne crash on US 281: DPS

LINN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A McAllen man died in a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon after striking a concrete barrier and going airborne on US 281, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The crash happened at approximately 1 p.m. on US 281 north of FM 1017 in Linn. Robert Butkiewicz, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation report from DPS revealed that Butkiewicz was traveling southbound on US 281 in a red Toyota Tacoma when the crash happened. According to the preliminary investigation, Butkiewicz was approaching an overpass when the Toyota drove off the roadway onto the median, overcorrected, and struck the barrier. After the Toyota struck the barrier, the vehicle went airborne and landed on a grassy area along US Frontage 281. The crash remains under investigation.
