Marion man caused deadly crash while passing multiple vehicles at 90 mph

MARION, Ind. — Investigators said a Marion man's reckless passing on a county road is the reason why a 55-year-old woman is dead. Alexander Wimsatt was charged on Tuesday with reckless homicide, a Level 5 felony; criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony and reckless driving as a misdemeanor. A warrant was issued for his arrest on Wednesday. According to court documents, Wimsatt is accused of causing a deadly crash on 450 North in Grant County on May 8. Investigators said Wimsatt was traveling eastbound on the county road when he began passing multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed. Data collected from his smashed-up Jeep Grand Cherokee later revealed that Wimsatt was passing vehicles at 91 mph just four seconds before the crash. In his haste, Wimsatt failed to notice an oncoming vehicle in the westbound lane, another Jeep Grand Cherokee with a Marion couple inside. Both vehicles attempted to evade each other, but it was too late and Wimsatt was allegedly driving too fast. Data from his vehicle reveals Wimsatt didn't hit the brake until 1.7 seconds before impact, his speed still over 80 mph. Sandra Beouy died as a result of the collision. Her husband later told police he and his wife had just dropped off their daughter and granddaughter and had been on their way home, talking about planting their garden, when the crash occurred. Police spoke with Wimsatt in the hospital, according to the court documents, who was recovering from leg surgery. Wimsatt reportedly told police he had been running late to work and recalled passing a car before his memory jumped ahead to him waking up in a field. Investigators said neither driver was impaired at the time of the crash. Wimsatt could face up to six years in prison on a Level 6 felony.
