Man killed after steel beams fall during industrial accident in North Charleston
A 44-year-old man died Wednesday morning after a bundle of steel beams fell on him during an industrial accident at a North Charleston business, according to a North Charleston Police Department incident report. Officers were dispatched around 9:59 a.m. to 7135 Bryhawke Circle after receiving a report of an industrial accident. When they arrived, they found the victim pinned beneath a bundle of steel beams. Fire personnel began recovery operations and pronounced the man dead at about 10:13 a.m., according to the report. A witness told officers he and the victim were unloading a truck when the accident occurred. According to the witness, the victim climbed onto the truck's hoist near the cab to secure a bundle of steel beams with a chain. As the witness reached for the chain, the rear portion of the bundle fell onto the victim. The witness said only the portion of the load closest to the cab had been properly secured. The Charleston County Coroner's Office and a police chaplain were called to the scene. No arrests were made. The victim's identity had not been released in the police report.
