Man in critical condition after coal carrying semi overturns

A man is in critical condition after a semi-truck carrying coal rolls over on a ramp in Berrien County. First responders were called to a crash with injuries at around 6:15 a.m. on U.S. 12 westbound near I-94 and the exit 4 ramp. Police said when first responders arrived, they found a semi with a double dump-trailer full of coal laying driver’s side down. The driver was trapped inside the cab. Police say 67-year-old Billy Gibbs of Southgate, Mich. was taken to Franciscan Hospital for treatment but was later airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center. Police say Gibbs remains in critical condition. In their investigation, police believe the cause of the crash was due to speed. Medics indicated the driver may have been suffering from a medical emergency that caused him to drive fast on a ramp. The truck was heading towards Burns Harbor for a delivery. Cleanup for the crash scene took over six hours Wednesday morning.
