Man celebrating 20th birthday crashes dad's BMW while intoxicated, killing 1: police
KATY, Texas (WKRC) - A man celebrating his birthday reportedly crashed his father's BMW while intoxicated, killing one, according to authorities. According to authorities , 20-year-old Dejon Fortune is charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with the fatal two-vehicle crash. Deputies responded at about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, to Westheimer Parkway in Katy, Texas, where investigators said a white BMW driven by Fortune struck a black Cadillac driven by Sung Bae. PEOPLE reported that Bae's vehicle struck a light pole and two trees after the collision, and was pronounced dead at the scene. A probable cause affidavit obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE states that Fortune had been celebrating his 20th birthday hours before the crash. He allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol that night and told investigators he had left a birthday party at a friend's house to go to Taco Bell. He also allegedly said he could not recall when he had his last drink and remained at the restaurant until it closed. Two passengers were riding in the BMW at the time of the crash. One allegedly told officers they removed alcohol from the vehicle after the collision, while another said Fortune had been driving between 70 and 80 mph, per the report. According to the affidavit obtained by PEOPLE , the BMW belonged to Fortune's father. Fortune was arrested and booked into the Fort Bend County Jail on the following charge: Intoxication manslaughter (felony) "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Bae as they navigate this heartbreaking loss," Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said in a statement. "Impaired driving continues to claim innocent lives in our community. We urge everyone to make responsible choices and never get behind the wheel while under the influence." Fortune's bond is pending a magistrate's review. The crash remains under investigation.
