Legal action over deadly Vermilion moped accident
A young woman from Lorain has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with a tragic crash on Liberty Avenue in Vermilion which led to the passing of a 20-year-old moped rider. The incident occurred on October 14 and was investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The victim, Merik Bendig, initially survived the collision but succumbed to his injuries later that day. The charging decision was made about two weeks after the crash, following an in-depth investigation and medical assessments. The suspect has a scheduled pretrial hearing in Vermilion Municipal Court on January 27. If found guilty, she could face a jail sentence of approximately three months, along with a fine of up to $750, license suspension, and other court-imposed penalties. Vehicular manslaughter charges are typically brought after a thorough review of evidence, including crash reconstruction, especially in cases where a victim's death occurs post-incident.
