Iowa man sentenced to prison for deadly 2021 DUI crash into Vero Beach home

An Iowa man accused of killing a woman and injuring another man during a DUI crash more than five years ago learned his sentence.According to court documents in Indian River County, Shane R. Wilson, 42, from West Des Moines, Iowa, was sentenced to 25 years in the Florida state prison system on June 12. Wilson was adjudicated guilty by the court.Wilson is accused of driving his Ford pickup truck into a home located on 27th Avenue Southwest in Vero Beach early on Feb. 27, 2021. Two people were transported to HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce. The evening of Feb. 27, Maria Zeledon, 62, died from injuries sustained in the crash at the hospital.A Florida Highway Patrol arrest report said Wilson allegedly left the scene of the crash on foot.He was taken into custody by Indian River County Sheriff’s Office deputies. A witness at the scene said they spoke with Wilson, who said another vehicle ran in front of him, which made him swerve and hit the house.While at the Indian River County Jail, Wilson provided an FHP trooper with two breath samples to determine his blood alcohol concentration.According to the FHP report, in both samples, Wilson’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.12%.In Florida, the limit for blood alcohol concentration is 0.08%.Get the latest news updates with the WPBF 25 News app. You can download it here.
