IMPD investigating fatal crash on south side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Police are investigating a fatal crash on the south side of Indianapolis. According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of West Sumner Avenue and South Harding Street around 2:26 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a crash. When police arrived at the scene, they determined at least one person was killed in the crash. IMPD's fatal crash investigators have been called to the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have not specified the exact number of people who were injured or killed in the crash. The number of vehicles involved in the crash is also unknown. As of this article's publication, no additional information on the crash — including its cause — had been made available. Wednesday's crash is the fifth fatal crash reported in Marion County in as many days. Pedestrians were killed in crashes on North High School Road, East Washington Street and Raymond Street on Saturday and Sunday. The pedestrian killed in the crash on East Washington Street in Cumberland was six years old. A 22-year-old man was arrested for his alleged role in the crash. The pedestrian killed in the crash along Raymond Street was in a wheelchair. IMPD reported that he was in the median of the roadway when he was struck by a motorist. No arrests related to the Raymond Street crash had been announced by IMPD as of this article's publication. On Monday night, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on the south side of Indianapolis. The crash happened along South East Street. Indy's Vision Zero Task Force, which is on a mission to eliminate fatal crashes in Indianapolis by 2035, shared its first annual report last month. The report indicated that the City of Indianapolis has made progress in reducing the number of fatal crashes within its limits. Per the report, there has been a 30% decline in crashes in the city since 2021. Upon the publication of its first annual report, the task force indicated that it is making progress.
