"I’m glad that he’s getting charged", new details released in deadly wrong-way I-40 crash

New details have emerged in the investigation into a deadly wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 that killed four people, with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol announcing 10 charges against the driver accused of causing the collision. Authorities said Michael Rosario-Cruz was driving the wrong way on I-40 when he hit another vehicle carrying the four victims. He now faces 10 charges, including four counts of second-degree murder. The other charges include two DUI counts, two firearms-related charges, transporting an open container and wrong-way on a one-way road. OHP also said Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on him. Tim Tipton, the commissioner of public safety, described the crash as intentional. “So this was a murder, this was an intentional act,” Tipton said. Tipton said Rosario-Cruz “made the intentional decision to go and drink at a local bar, restaurant, then get on the interstate, so impaired that he got on going the wrong direction in a large vehicle.” SEE ALSO: "This is an intentional act," New details released on driver accused of killing 4 The department said investigators believe Rosario-Cruz entered the highway at I-40 and Meridian. Tipton said troopers began responding after reports of a wrong-way driver came in. “We received calls right around the Meridian MacArthur area of a wrong-way driver. Troopers immediately responded and were just seconds behind him whenever the collision happened,” Tipton said. OHP said a pistol was found in the truck along with beer cans. Tipton also addressed Rosario-Cruz’s legal status. “The defendant in this case is not a legal citizen of the United States. He entered the country and in 2015 was given DACA status,” Tipton said. After Wednesday’s update, the mothers of two of the victims said they were glad the suspect was in custody and facing charges. Regina Hickson, the mother of Kiercy Hickson, said, “I’m glad, you know, that he’s getting charged. He’s being held accountable. You know I pray that the justice system does right by these kids.” Hickson said justice would mean “Being held accountable to the fullest and never stepping foot outside of a prison.” Shirley Salazar, the mother of Haliegh Salazar, said, “There’s no, nothing that’s gonna make our kids come back, but if they can give them the max sentence to each and every charge, I think that we, we will be, we’ll be happy about that.” Salazar said the families’ immediate focus is on mourning. “Right now we’re focusing on putting our children to rest and, you know, we’ll see him in court and we’ll get our babies justice,” she said.
