Hearing set for Friday in case of man charged in boat crash that killed Citadel cadet
A hearing will be taking place Friday in a Charleston court in the case of a man who is charged in a deadly boat crash that killed a 19-year-old Citadel cadet in late April . Edward Tavel was charged with involuntary manslaughter after investigators found he was driving the boat when it crashed into a floating dock, killing Evan Greenleigh . The crash happened on April 25 when a boat carrying seven people struck a dock near King Street in Mount Pleasant's Old Village. Greenleigh died from blunt force injuries sustained in the crash and the six other occupants, including the boat's operator, were taken to a hospital for treatment. Additionally witness statements indicated that members of the group had spent the day and evening socializing on the water and at waterfront bars before the crash, according to an incident report. The report lists alcohol use, careless or reckless operation and failure to maintain a proper lookout as contributing factors. Investigators found that Tavel had consumed alcohol earlier in the day. However, a blood sample taken at the hospital tested negative for alcohol, according to SCDNR. The hearing is set to take place at 2 p.m. Friday.
