Harrison County juvenile dead after crash in Morgantown, investigation underway
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A juvenile is dead following a single vehicle accident in Monongalia County that is now under investigation. According to the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office, the accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on I-79 southbound at mile marker 143. Witnesses to the crash told officials they saw "a vehicle traveling southbound lost control and veered off the roadway. The vehicle became airborne and struck a tree on the hillside situated between the interstate and Smithtown Road. " The driver, who was the only one in the vehicle and identified as a juvenile from Harrison County, was pronounced dead at the scene. Their name is being withheld out of respect for the family and because of the nature of the investigation. The release goes on to confirm that no other vehicles were involved and that there are currently no closures on I-79. No other information has been made available at this time. The Monongalia County Sheriff's Office, including the Crash Reconstruction Team, Monongalia County EMS, the Clinton and Winfield District Volunteer Fire Departments and the West Virginia Department of Transportation all responded to this incident.
