Greenwich crash data: 41 car accidents in March, April with majority by I-95 exits

GREENWICH — Greenwich saw most of its car crashes in March and April occur in two areas near major thoroughfares, according to data compiled by the University of Connecticut. The crashes mimic the two prior months, which saw accidents congregate in the same hotspots. All told, there were 41 crashes involving 77 vehicles over the two-month period, and areas of Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway accounted for 53.7% of all crashes. I-95 alone saw 36.6% of all crashes in March and April with eight southbound and seven northbound, all between the areas of exit 2 and exit 5. In one incident on I-95 north at exit 3, two vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision as the the vehicle in front was attempting to avoid a crash that had happened previously. I-95 has some of the most congested driving areas in the country, with southbound lanes connecting Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Norwalk, and Westport being named the busiest interstate corridor in the United States in 2024. Conditions were not a factor in most crashes as many occurred during the day in clear weather conditions, according to UConn’s data. A large majority of the I-95 accidents were front-to-rear collisions, but some were more severe, such as a three-car accident that began with a vehicle rear-ending a car before careening into another. Meanwhile, the Merritt Parkway accounted for 17% of all accidents in Greenwich in March and April, with most again happening in a small stretch of Route 15. Most of the Merritt crashes occurred southbound with several in the area of exit 5, including one involving four vehicles rear-ending each other as well as a three-car crash. Various areas of Route 1 northbound also showed a susceptibility to accidents, as more than 12% of all crashes over the past two months occurred on the road, including two pedestrians hit in crosswalks in separate incidents. Both resulted in suspected minor injuries, according to UConn’s data. There was also an accident on Field Point Road involving a vehicle hitting a motorist on an electric scooter. No other area of town had more than a single car accident over the past two months, and many of the side street incidents were motorists misjudging turns at intersections resulting in collisions.
