Giraffe at zoo dies in 'sad and unfortunate event'

A giraffe that was born at the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina has sadly passed away due to what officials have called a "tragic accident." The giraffe, named Kiko, was the first one born at the zoo back in 2012 and was later moved to the Toronto Zoo in Canada. The incident occurred when Kiko was given access to a new area within his habitat and got caught in a door. Despite immediate efforts to help him, his unique anatomy made the injuries fatal. An investigation has been initiated, and the Toronto Zoo is committed to sharing the findings to prevent similar incidents. Kiko had been receiving specialized care for a hoof/foot injury, and his unexpected death has had a profound impact on the Wildlife Care team. Masai giraffes, like Kiko, are considered endangered, with only around 43,000 remaining in the wild. Kiko had sired two calves and had a third due soon. The zoo is mourning the loss while ensuring the well-being of the other giraffes and staff.
