Genise Taylor, suspect in fatal wrong-way I-75 crash, indicted on new charges

A woman suspected of causing a deadly wrong-way crash on I-75 in Collier County was indicted on new charges Thursday.According to court documents, Genise Taylor, 24, is facing four charges after the Florida Highway Patrol reported that Arthur Gilbert, 96, was killed when his vehicle and another were hit on March 18 at approximately 4:18 a.m.Indicted on multiple DUI-related chargesTaylor has been indicted for DUI manslaughter, DUI damage to person/property, vehicular homicide and reckless driving with damage to person/property, the documents noted.Taylor was arrested for the fatal wrong-way crash, and troopers said she was driving with a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. She was also pulled over and cited for traveling at 71 mph in a 45-mph zone along US-41 by Collier County Deputy Eric Pellegrino just hours before the crash.During a pre-trial hearing in March, prosecutors noted that Taylor admitted on a jail call that she knew Pellegrino.Prosecutors also said Pellegrino didn't let her drive and allowed her friends to pick her up after the traffic stop before they went to Waffle House. Taylor got behind the wheel again sometime after the stop, according to investigators. The Collier County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating the traffic stop involving Pellegrino and Taylor. CCSO said he has not been placed on administrative leave as the internal affairs investigation is ongoing.Family remembers Arthur, seeks justicePamela Gilbert, Arthur's widow, previously spoke to Gulf Coast News after the crash."This woman will live with this for the rest of her life," said Pamela Gilbert. "The law will take care of whatever needs to happen, and I couldn't put my energy into that anger."Arthur Gilbert would have turned 97 on April 9.Gilbert's family has since hired the law firm Morgan & Morgan.A statement from Morgan & Morgan founder John Morgan and attorney Blake Lange reads as follows:“Arthur Gilbert was a beloved and respected member of the Naples community, and his death has left an unimaginable void in the lives of his wife, family, and friends. We’re in the early stages of investigating this senseless tragedy, and we’re exploring all possible avenues for justice and aiming to hold those responsible for his death fully accountable to the greatest extent of the law.”Records also show that Taylor has hired her own lawyer instead of using a public defender for the case.Previous coverage:Family of victim who was killed in deadly wrong-way I-75 crash working with attorney 'It was a cop that I knew': Suspect's jail call reveals details before deadly wrong-way I-75 crashWoman arrested for deadly I-75 crash was stopped for going 71 mph in a 45 on US-41 hours before Driver in deadly wrong-way I-75 crash knew deputy who stopped her hours before, prosecutors say Woman accused of deadly wrong-way DUI crash on I-75 in Collier County had a BAC of 0.213, FHP saysWrong-way driver arrested after crash kills man on I-75 in Collier County DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
