Fremont High School student killed in crash

FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) — A Fremont High School student died following a crash Wednesday. In a message to families Thursday, Fremont Public Schools Superintendent Brad Reyburn mourned the death of the student, whose name was not released. "We are shattered by this devastating loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones," Reyburn wrote. Michigan State Police said a 15-year-old boy was involved in a crash on Luce Road near 48th Street near the city limits shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday. MSP said the teen's dirt bike collided with a septic truck. The teen was rushed to the hospital, where he died. "The Michigan State Police extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident," MSP said. State police said the teen was wearing a helmet and that neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to have been involved, but that the teen was thought to be the at-fault driver. The crash remained under investigation Thursday. The school district reminded parents that kids may struggle even if they were not close to the teen who died. It urged parents to create an environment where children could share their feelings and be heard and offer honesty and reassurance in return. Counselors and the crisis response team are prepared to help students as they grieve, including during the summer. "Be attentive to changes in your child's behavior or emotional well-being in the coming days and weeks. If you notice significant changes, talk with your child and please reach out to us so we can help connect them with additional support," the district said.
