Four people killed in Nevada crash after driver loses control attempting to pass another vehicle

WELLS, Nevada (ABC4) — Four people, including a 13-year-old, were killed in a fatal collision on U.S. 93 in Nevada on Monday after one vehicle lost control while attempting to pass another car. According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the crash happened near Elko County mile marker 79 on U.S. 93, approximately 5 miles north of Wells. Troopers responded to the crash at 11:37 a.m. pacific time, and the preliminary investigation found that a Honda Odyssey minivan and a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck collided after the Honda crossed the centerline to attempt to pass another vehicle and lost control. The driver of the Honda and two passengers sustained life-threatening injuries and were pronounced dead on scene, and the passenger of the Toyota also suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. The remaining occupants of the vehicles were transported to local hospitals and are in critical condition. The driver of the Honda was identified as Nazia Salma, 44, and the two passengers were identified as Nihaa Shaik, 19, and a 13-year-old boy, all from Union City, California. The passenger of the Toyota was identified as Sophia Winiger, 23, from San Diego, California. The Honda was traveling southbound when it crossed the centerline to pass another vehicle, and the driver of the Honda lost control. The driver of the Toyota swerved to the right to try to avoid a collision, but the right front of the Honda struck the left front of the Toyota. The Toyota ran off the roadway and came to rest on its passenger side on the dirt shoulder. The crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team.
