Force of fatal crash in Wells County snaps utility pole in half
WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) - One of three young men died after a crash near the Wells County line on Easter Sunday. The driver of a BMW was northbound on Blackford County Road 600 East "at a high rate of speed" that afternoon, according to a Facebook post from the Wells County Sheriff's Office. There were two passengers in the car with the 21-year-old driver. Shortly after the driver crossed over into Wells County, he somehow lost control of the car, the sheriff's office said. The BMW crossed the center line and crashed into a utility pole, with the passenger side taking the brunt of the hit. The force of the collision snapped the pole in half, as described by the sheriff's office. The car then rolled into a field. One of the passengers, a 19-year-old from Hartford City, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff's office identified him as Gavyn Orlando. The driver and the 20-year-old second passenger were taken to a hospital; the extent of their injuries was not confirmed. The investigation is ongoing; it's unclear if charges are being filed against the driver.
