Fatal Single Vehicle Crash on State Route 70 Near Maddalena Road Under Investigation
On July 23, 2026, at approximately 2:58 p.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Quincy Area, Portola Resident Post, responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a utility pole, on State Route 70. east of Maddalena Road, The preliminary investigation indicates the male driver was traveling westbound on SR-70 at an undetermined speed when the vehicle left the roadway. The vehicle struck two metal paddle markers, a barbed wire fence, a sign, a metal gate post, and a utility pole. Life-saving measures were immediately attempted at the scene by personnel from the CHP and the Eastern Plumas District Paramedics. Despite these efforts, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
