Fatal motorcycle crash in Makawao claims life of 48-year-old

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A 48-year-old Haʻikū man died Wednesday night after a motorcycle crash in Makawao, according to Maui police. The single-vehicle collision happened just before 10:30 p.m. on Piʻiholo Road near the intersection with Mahiai Place. Investigators said the man was driving northbound on Piʻiholo Road when he failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and struck an embankment. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigators have not yet determined whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing. The fatal crash marks Maui County’s fifth traffic fatality of 2026. At the same time last year, Maui County had recorded 11 traffic deaths.
